Costume Reveal: A Handmade Halloween
October 31, 2010
Since last year’s Halloween costume was such a huge hit, and it only took me one broken sewing machine, three trips to Joann Fabrics and about 2 stress filled days of reading sewing machine manuals, I figured hey, why not go with another handmade Halloween costume?
Last year I made a dress, half purple, half white and stenciled Vitamin Water onto the side. It was, surprisingly, a huge hit.
This year, for Halloween, the boyfriend, his best friend and his best friend’s girlfriend and I … we were, the FLINTSTONES. The dress was far easier to sew than the Vitamin Water, and I simply used paper mache to cover Styrofoam balls. The wig, well wigs skeeve me out more than anything, but alas it is Halloween so I said screw it! Orange wig was a go.
Boyfriend’s costume was even easier to make. For starters, Barney Rubble’s attire is hardly complicated. It also helped that in one quick trip to a thrift store, we found an old woman’s long, brown, weird-fake-fur-slash-wool-slash-suede trench coat turned peacoat. It screamed Barney Rubble in the stone ages. We cut the sleeves off, cut off the collar and poked a few holes in the chest. String through a thick black cord and Barney Rubble is born.
Best thing about this Halloween was that the total cost of our costumes came in way under what we would have spent had we gone with the store purchased, costume in a bag. Did you know those things can run you $70? Who knew.

Finally: Riding Boots

In other news, I thoroughly enjoy receiving compliments on my brand new boots. It makes the exorbitant amount of money that I spent on these boots, well… well worth it.
